Jackboot Democrats
"Jackboot Democrats" is another song set in the Thatcher era, which satirises the government claim to be represent popular opinion. In reality, the Thatcher government (and the powerful interests it represented) ignored or managed public opinion while paying lip service to democracy, all the time calculating for their own benefits.
”Jackboot DemocRATS’ is a song about what was called the Thatcherite consensus, a ruling-class conspiracy with the complicity of the media to keep the plebs in their place. It was written in the satirical style of my early songs but more inventive, perhaps and not so good-humoured.” - LR (sleevenotes to The World Turned Upside Down (CD box set), p38)
