Cashiered John Profumo
A second song about the celebrated 5th Baron, this number concerns the so-called Profumo Affair of June 1963, in which the Conservative politician was found to have not only had an affair with a woman believed to have Soviet spying connections, but to have deliberately lied about it in Parliament. Needless to say, he was defrocked, prompting Leon to write this satirical song lamenting the sad fact that Profumo had been found out.
The lyric was published in the paper, Tribune, but was not apparently ever recorded by Leon. Nevertheless, it was composed as a song rather than poem, as its inclusion in the later songbook Look Here proves (albeit with a 1968 copyright).
