Who Are the Moonmen?
This song barely survives, but was recalled by Leon in 2011. We have just enough information to list it in his discography. The song dates to the period 1970-72, when Leon was writing for Inter-Action. Project director Ed Berman requested Leon write a song about the moonmen, leading Leon to enquire who they were - and Berman to demand a song of that name by the next day. No audio is known, and no sheet music has been published. All we have to go by are Leon's recollections:
"I'd be phoned up by the dynamic American director of Inter-Action, Ed Berman, and told: 'We want a song by tomorrow about the moonmen.' I had no idea what he was talking about. The moonmen? Who are the moonmen? 'Who are the Moonmen? Yeah. Great title for a song.' And by the next day 'Who are the Moonmen?' became the marching song for that piece of participatory street theatre." - LR (Sleevenotes to The World Turned Upsdie Down, 2011)
