Whatever Happened to Nannerl?
Nannerl was Mozart's older sister, also highly talented but prevented from pursuing a musical calling by virtue of being female. When what would have been Mozart's 200th birthday occurred in 1991, attention was focussed on the composer, prompting Leon to recall his half-forgotten sister, who but for her gender, might have been world-famous. Instead, she became somebody's wife and mother, while her little brother made history.
"This is my small contribution to the Mozart industry generated by the bicentenary of his death." - LR (sleevenotes to Wo Sind Die Elefanten?, 1991)
"The bicentenary of Mozart's death in 1991 seemed to me to be worth a small song. Nannerl, like her younger brother, was a wonder child on the clavier. Both were paraded round Europe by their proud father for the entertainment and amusement of the aristocracy." - LR (Turning Silence Into Song (songbook), p1)
