Soldiering On
The second character to be depicted on Intruders is George, who Leon sketches as if watching a film of his life in five scenes. Perhaps derived distantly from "William", the story is one of a boy who is taught to bury his feelings and overcome pain and weakness, setting him on his path. In the end his is literally made of stone.
"In the five verses of 'Soldiering On' are crammed the key episodes in the life of George, a typical English hero, well-bred, well-adjusted, emotionally constipated and, I imagine, obsessively ordered and clean. For some reason, he reminds me of our Royal Family." - LR (Turning Silence Into Song (songbook), p25)
