Monsters
Published on paper a year before it was released as a recording, "Monsters" is the tale of a little boy named George, who starts out with a fear of monsters, which transmutes into a hatred for the bullies he encounters at school. One day he becomes so angry he hits back - and the thrill of victory leads him on the path of becoming a despot himself. The moral of the story - if you fight against what is bad, make sure you don't become one of the bad guys.
The song has deeper meaning of course, and began as a comment on the Gulf War, where the so-called War on Terror, and the removal of a dictator from Iraq, transmuted into a war of terror against an innocent population, and eventually the installation of a new tyranny.

"'Monsters' should perhaps be in the section of children's songs except that, at bottom, adults don't behave very differently from children." - LR (Turning Silence Into Song, (songbook), p75)
"Written just before the second Gulf War with Nietzche's warning in mind: 'When you fight with monsters, take care you do not become a monster yourself'." - LR (Turning Silence Into Song (sleevenotes), 2004)
