Looters
First released on a benefit CD in 2012, the song references events of a year previous, when looting raids spontaneously erupted all over the UK. The participants at the time seemed to have no political agenda, taking to the streets merely to help themselves to free consumer products from smashed up shops. And why not? Universally denounced by politicians and in the media, the looting prompted Leon to contrast their actions with the infinitely greater and more profound looting which is the history of British empire builders - as evinced, for example, in the plundered contents of the country's major museums. Since this is the example set by the rich and powerful, it seems natural enough that the working class should feel happy to do likewise. Innit?
