Leon’s
first studio album in four years was recorded at Gateway Studios in London,
during May 1983, with a host of collaborators. Besides producer Martin Carthy,
the LP also features familiar names such as Frankie Armstrong, Sandra Kerr and
Firoz Shapur, and a chorus of children on “One Two Three” which includes Leon’s
daughter Ruth. Notably, Leon’s
main collaborator from the previous decade, Roy Bailey, is absent.
All the songs on the album are presented on vinyl for the first time, although “Pills” and “My Daughter, My Son” had been included in Leon’s last songbook. A few of the numbers are revived from his largely unrecorded early-1970s output, including two from the Inter-Action project (“Penny for the Guy” and “One Two Three”) and another from They Shoot Horses (“Sun”).
Despite spirited numbers like "Pills", the album has a sense of slowness about it, with a number of moderately paced, long songs, including one ("The Last Chance") which clocks in at well over 11 minutes.

"The songs here seem to me to need no comment other than that given by their place in the pattern of the record. As for the title, some may think it overly optimistic in the circumstances. But why not?" - LR (Sleevenotes)
