Voices
The thrust of this song, recorded solo by Leon, would be elucidated years later, when he recorded "The Power of Song". In his notes accompanying the latter recording (see the booklet inside the box set The World Turned Upside Down (2011), p65), Leon remarked, "The idea that a song can be used as a political weapon, that its power can stir people to action, has a long history... In Soweto, women and children sang as they were shot down by the police, sang as they defied the bullets." This captures exactly the meaning of "Voices", which deals with the power of song in the hands of the weak, as an invincible weapon against the strong.
